The recent storms have pushed Rhopilema hispidum onto the beaches, stranding them.

This is the second most common large jellyfish in Hong Kong waters and can attain large sizes, almost up to a meter across in some measurements of stranded individuals. First described in the late 1880’s, it has a thick, white-colored umbrella covered in yellow or brown warts. It has eight shorter mouth-arms fused together at the base and lacks the long trailing tentacles of the most common species of jellyfish in Hong Kong waters, Cyanea nozakii. Despite its shorter reach, it can sting painfully. Some species of fish, crabs and brittle stars are known to associate with R. hispidum. It ranges from the Red Sea through the western Indo-Pacific and up to Japan. It is an edible jellyfish and is used in fisheries throughout Southeast Asia to feed the market in jellyfish.
