Freshwater jellyfish

There are around 20 species of freshwater jellyfish found across the world. One of the most invasive species is Craspedacusta sowerbii, thought to originate in the Yangtze river basin in China. The first sighting in the Hong Kong literature is from the 1940’s! This species has more recently been sighted around Hong Kong and observed in reservoirs. C. sowerbii appearances are unpredictable, so as you are hiking around HK’s many reservoirs, ponds and streams, look for freshwater jellies and let us know if you see them.
