Heads up: Some or all of the identifications affected by this split may have been replaced with identifications of Amphiprion. This happens when we can't automatically assign an identification to one of the output taxa. Review identifications of Amphiprion polymnus 119430

Taxonomic Split 147464 (Committed on 2024-10-05)

The latest update of CoF recognizes Amphiprion annamensis , referencing Allen and Erdmann 2024.

CoF and this website (https://amphiprionology.wordpress.com/2016/09/11/amphiprion-polymnus-group/) give the following repartition and criteria:

  • for A. annamensis: South China Sea (from Thailand to the Philippines), North to Japan and Taiwan. Middle stripe broad and does not reach belly, no posterior stripe.
  • for A. polymnus: Indonesia, southern Malaysia and Philippines, south to Australia, east to Melanesia. Middle stripe reaches belly, posterior stripe present (not always in Melanesian populations).

I've checked the atlasing and it works well.

Could you have a quick look to make sure you agree with the split as it is currently?

Nice to see this change finally made. Everything north of Wallace's Line should be annamensis.

Note that specimens from the southern coast of Mindanao are polymnus... so it's not all of the Philippines.

@joe_fish Great, could you confirm that the current attributions are correct?

OK, I've made the changes and committed.
Some observations are outside of atlases and will have to be ID'd manually.

Many thanks, @joe_fish!
