Featured Observation: White-breasted nuthatch


This week's featured observation is a white-breasted nuthatch, spotted by @mhalsted in Flinton, Ontario.

Catherine Brown from the Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research writes:
These photos are a great example of the strong straight bill that nuthatches use to peel back bark or break open their food- nuthatches are named for their ability to “hatch” open food (like hard nuts)! Keep an eye out for the white-breasted nuthatch and its unique foraging style of walking up and down tree trunks!

Ces photos illustrent parfaitement le bec droit et puissant que les sittelles utilisent pour éplucher l'écorce ou ouvrir leur nourriture. En anglais, les sittelles (nuthatches) sont nommées en raison de leur capacité à "faire éclore" (hatch) la nourriture (comme les noix dures) ! Gardez l'œil ouvert pour la sittelle à poitrine blanche et son style unique de recherche de nourriture qui consiste à marcher le long des troncs d'arbres !
