Zoe Mozola Journal Entry

The species I investigated the phylogeny of from my observations was the rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa). It is in the Rosa genus, family rosaceae, order rosales. It is an angiosperm tracheophyte in kingdom plantae.

The adaptation common to all our observations is a vascular system. All the plants we observed are tracheophytes (no mosses). The vascular system of a plant allows it to transport water and nutrients throughout the organism, which allows for a plant to grow taller and larger than one without a vascular system.

A unique adaptation to one of my observations are the fruits on the Dog-Rose. The brightly coloured red fruits attract consumers, who will then digest them, then expel and redistribute their seeds elsewhere, leading to a wide dispersal of their genetic material and better opportunities for population growth.
