This brilliant colour is caused by IIV-31 (Isopod Iridescent Virus). I've been checking hundreds of pill bugs over several years for this unusual phenomenon and my persistence finally paid off!
Sadly, this total colour change is usually the later stage of the virus; once a pill bug is this bright it generally doesn't have much longer to live.
Lush green tree on hill of canyon in balboa park. In lots of sunlight and relatively dry soil. Has clusters of banana shaped leaves.
the Bismarck Palm is a gorgeous specimen. Spending the time to sit and observe the tree allowed me to see the palms movement in the wind and shifting reflections of sunlight on the fronds. The color palette spans grey and light green hues, with different textures on the surface reflecting light in subtle ways. I was also able to listen to the sound of the breeze interacting with the palm, producing flutters of sound as the breeze moved the leaves, particularly at the edges of the leaves. The palms trunk is roughly textured and scratchy to the touch. There was no notable smell and I did not attempt to taste the tree in any way
