iNat suggested this is an Eriogonum
Second pic shows the steep hillside where this plant grows, it's a lavender-tinted soil layer which is where we expressly decided to head to because the substrate was different from that on our approach hike.
Actually uncertainty is 5 m from iPhone pic rather than 100 m as originally entered when I posted the observation
Banner pink tipped with vein pattern curving down from top. Stems and leaves covered in hairs, long lateral roots. Right next to trail in loose, dry, fine soil. Lots of leaf litter, little loving soil cover. Immediately under juniper canopy with Poaceae and Opuntia nearby. Lots of ant hills
