An adult female Coastal Pacific Bushtit (Psaltriparus minimus minimus), photographed as she was gleaning for insects in a patch of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) at Palo Alto Baylands in northern Santa Clara County, CA. I found her along Embarcadero Road, across from the Palo Alto Regional Water Quality Treatment Plant. Identified her to subspecies based on her brownish crown and gray cheeks, as well as geographical range; P. minimus minimus would be the only subspecies possible for this location.
