Grubby looking big that lives in our compost; came out after a heavy rain
The Black Soldier fly was about 2cm long with a black body. Its wings were dark brown in color and remained folded while on a leaf. Its legs are black where it connects to the body at the first joint, but are very light brown (the color of dried wood) for the rest. Its head had asymmetrical wavy cream lines which get straighter the further they were from the midline. It appeared to have six legs, as well as the three common sections of an insect: a head, thorax and abdomen.
It did not seem fearful as I moved close to photograph it but remained sitting on a leaf. The Black Soldier fly is known to be abundant in Southeastern USA during late spring and early Fall.
