Many, shallow, some deep. One was very large. The one in the last two images was a really nice red colour.

This is an unnamed species. In the 2024 edition of my "Coastal Fishes of New Zealand" book (due out mid 2024) I call this species 'eyebrow perch Hypoplectrodes sp.'
In Te Papa's "Fishes of New Zealand" book (2015) it is incorrectly called Hypoplectrodes coronatus - it has not been formally described so this name has no standing.

This boarfish was solitary. The dive guide indicated they are more often are seen in pairs.
