Growing in a tuft, multiple stalks extend from a rosette that is connected to the substrate by thin clear rhizoids. Stems are thin, dark green and gritty to the touch due to calcium carbonate buildup. Stems are covered by parallel columns of corticating cells. There are three times the number of corticating cells than there are branchlets at each node. At the base of each branchlet, there are two tiers of small globose stipulodes. Freshly picked plants have a distinctive garlic odor.
