Very high abundance of these guys in today's hike. Even found multiples under the same cover object on numerous occasions, including these four found under a rock no more than 1.5-2 feet wide.

Mature male in reproductive condition (about 200 mm total length, with a swollen cloaca), from a large leaf pack in a deep pool of a clear, sand-bottomed upper tributary of Bayou Boeuf in the Bayou Teche watershed. Although this individual looks very similar to Necturus beyeri, it is in the range of N. louisianensis according to Boundy & Carr (2017, Amphibians & Reptiles of Louisiana) and black-and-yellow-striped larvae that were clearly N. louisianensis have been collected in this drainage; also, N. beyeri is not known to occur in this watershed. I added the ventral photo on 31 Dec 2018 after the first three community IDs.
