Japanese Pond Smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis)

Description

This East Asian smelt was introduced to the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta in the 1950's as a forage species for native trout. They are now considered a threat to the endangered delta smelt due to their ability to hybridize. This specimen was caught during the USFWS's Enhanced Delta Smelt Monitoring Program.
