On upper surface of leaf. Typically eggs are laid on lower surfaces of leaves, but every once and a while I find one on the top side. This small Common Milkweed plant https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/238624120 has a second Monarch egg on it https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/238623893, this time on the underside of a leaf.
