Groups of Quercus coccinea in wet mesic prairie habitat. Adjacent Quercus velutina grow further west in the preserve on Oakville sand loam. Occasional Quercus alba and Populus tremuloides associate. Comptonia and wetland Carex are common in the understory.

Andrew Hipp of the MOR regards these trees as Quercus ellipsoidalis and groups them as most closely related to Quercus velutina.

Acorns collected from Pennsylvania Allegheny Forest, Pelham and Montague Massachusetts via Harvard Forest Research Station. Massachusetts /Pennsylvania trees are Quercus coccinea.
