Description
One of the most wonderful sounds of the Vumba must be the eerie humming of distant fog horns on misty nights. Obviously no fishing port nearby at 1700 m altitude in the mountains, the sounds are the calls of the mysterious Buff-spotted Flufftails in the forests around our house. These birds are often heard but never seen until one day the guy in the photo casually walked into the lounge of our guesthouse and parked himself at our bar. He stayed for quite a while but didn't drink much and he did not become a regular.

Jack, the Gripper
Huge striking fellow (c. 50 mm long). Feared his schnozzle was a rostrum (giant Assassin!) so kept off fingers. Really hard to pry him off dog-leash - broke several twigs before he agreed to climb onto one for release at base of nearby tree.

Wasp feeding (on fungus?) on a Napier grass leaf. Length: c. 4.6 mm.
Unlike most hymenoptera, this individual was really chilled - it remained feeding at the same patch for over 30 minutes! Advances by larger insects that showed an interest in its patch were dismissed by merely raising the nearest rear leg and waving it at the intruder (all retreated rapidly, rather than take on the spine at the end of the tibia)!

Friendly Neighbors
This was an interesting interaction and I think the Reptile might slightly benefit from this interaction. Let me explain. So we were in Kruger Park and as we were driving we saw them and drove past. We then reversed back and the mongoose was a bit nervous and made a quick movement (it looked like he was not sure if he should run away or see what happens). Now the interesting part is that the quick movement of the mongoose triggered the reptile to run into the old termite mound. Thus I think the quick movement from the mongoose might be used as an alarm for the reptile.
