Description
I have no idea on this one.
Wing venation looks like a Shore Fly, but we are semi-arid. So the habitat doesn't seem to fit.
~4mm long.
I thought the antennae may have been an aberation, but we found 2 in success nights now at the night light.
Can't find any photo's of a fly with this large nor colourfull antennae.
These are full screen photo's to help see details.
https://www.ellura.info/Diptera-Hymenoptera.html#Axinia-cornuta
Has a "V" ridge on top of it's head in front of the ocelli.
It's head is also covered in punctuations.
The thorax seems to several longitudinal rows of setae.

Was searching all the tiny holes in the trunk of Acacia mernsii and inserted long back appendage (sorry l don’t know the name of that part) in one hole for at least a minute. Possibly laying eggs? I couldn’t get very clear shots but managed a small video of it. It’s quite small I thought initially it was a mosquito

Description
I'm cheering for the mosquito this time! These large flies were impossible to escape, even on high mountain slopes with a good wind. Their bites were painful and left a good-size welt, but this one seemed to have a biter of its own. The mosquito stayed on its back and appeared to be feeding on it.

Description
Who'd think this would fly...eventually? In the central highlands October 19, I found a massive caterpillar being attacked by a predatory shield bug. I extracted the bug, but didn't take photos of the scene as the caterpillar was way too big for my lens. It just happened that I was driving north to a bioblitz full of kids and I knew they would love to see this big hairy caterpillar. I was so busy I didn't even take a photo of it with my phone!! The next day the caterpillar had started to form a cocoon. It then became a kitchen pet and it dutifully completed its pupation and emerged on December 6th.
Full story (including the offending shield bug in action) and more pics are here: tasmanianinsectfieldguide.com/hexapoda/insectsoftasmanial...
