Paige Kowal at the Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research offers some insight into duck hybridization:
“Hybridization is a rare event when members of two different species crossbreed and produce offspring, sometimes resulting in a combination of characteristics from both species. In the bird world, waterfowl hybridize more often than any other group of birds. Mallards are one of the most common waterfowl species to crossbreed; most often with American black ducks and pintails.”

"L'hybridation est un événement rare au cours duquel des membres de deux espèces différentes se croisent et produisent une progéniture, ce qui entraîne parfois une combinaison de caractéristiques des deux espèces. Dans le monde des oiseaux, les sauvagines s'hybrident plus souvent que tout autre groupe d'oiseaux. Le canard colvert est l'une des espèces de sauvagine qui se croisent le plus souvent, le plus souvent avec le canard noir et le canard pilet."
