Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve

The Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve is contains three distinct biomes with unique plants and animals. The grassland biome, is characterized by rolling hills, open grasslands, and scattered trees and relies on fire as an important ecosystem driver. Some of the dominant grass species found in the reserve include Themeda triandra, Hyparrhenia hirta, and Setaria sphacelata. The savanna biome is characterized by a mix of trees and grasses. The trees found in this biome include thorn trees, Combretum, and Terminalia species. The grasses found in the savanna biome include Panicum maximum and Digitaria eriantha. The third biome is Forest or specifically for this area the Northern Afrotemperate Forest. It is found in the steep kloofs and is characterized by its dense tree cover.
