I am a lifelong fish lover and retired at 56 to dedicate myself to the study of fish, primarily coastal fishes in the East Indies. In 2022 I performed a 3 month survey in Dauin (Philippines) funded by the PADI Aware Foundation and since then I have been diving 5-6 months over the winter to collect data at other locations. My focus is on biodiversity, biogeography, and habitat associations with a particular fondness for the small cryptic fishes that are often overlooked. However, I am really interested in anything to do with fish, except for eating them.
I studied biology and completed my PhD at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) but my academic career has been in biophysics, biochemistry and bioinformatics at the University of Aberta (Canada). I am using my computing background to write my own web portal (biodives.com) about diving, UW photography and an iNaturalist-like section, AquaNotes, is in development. The goal for AquaNotes, and the reason to not just use iNaturalist, is to allow more detailed habitat information to be captured.
