I walked for just over 30 minutes around the wooded area by the reservoir. It was a cloudy and rainy day with cool temperatures. As I walked I mostly looked down at the ground because I was specifically looking for different types of fungi. I found fungi of various different shapes, colors and sizes. Some were small, white, and round, while others were brown and flat. I even saw a fungus that was orange, which was pretty cool because I didn't know fungi were ever brightly colored. I saw fungi on the ground but also lichens on rocks and trees. It is interesting to think about how much biodiversity exists even just in our surrounding area. Right near campus there are so many different kinds of organisms, even within the same overall kingdom of fungi. Observing all the different types of fungi made me curious about how they evolved into different species as well as the roles these different fungi play in the ecosystem.
