Abstract
The observation site (29°27’32.5”N, 1°26’35.0”W) is located 252 km in a straight line west of the closest border with Morocco and 595 km north of the border with Mauritania and Mali. The site is a private agricultural garden in a large oasis at an altitude of 380 m with a 1 ha area of abundant vegetation and a madjen (traditional basin) for irrigation. Kerzaz lies in the Saoura valley along the N6 road, on the left (north-east) bank of the Oued Saoura. The Grand Erg Occidental, a large area of continuous sand dunes, lies to the east and the rocky Ougarta range rise to the west. A large lake (Sebkhet el-Melah) lies nearby and vast areas of desert stretch in all directions.
