Michael Lachance has a Master’s of Science in entomology from the University of Missouri and has been employed by Virginia Cooperative Extension for 25 years, providing pest management and commercial horticulture programs in central Virginia. He advocates for integrated pest management, including the creation of protected habitats for beneficials & pollinators in agricultural landscapes. His work in Extension also allows him to address small farm business management, intergenerational land transfer, forage production, and soil & water conservation. Michael serves on the state steering committees for the Virginia’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension (SARE) program http://www.southernsare.org , and the the Virginia Master Naturalist program, http://www.virginiamasternaturalist.org , and serves as president of the Virginia Natural History Society, http://virginianaturalhistorysociety.com. He is also a beekeeper, and enjoys collecting insects associated with both agriculture and undisturbed habitats. His interests in insect biodiversity and natural control of crop pests have taken him on assignments about Virginia, plus professional trips to Belize, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Tajikistan.
