Love of birds and bugs as a kid in northcentral Pennsylvania led to graduate school at the University of North Carolina where I studied a hybrid zone in the Plethodon jordani complex and assisted in experiments on mountain Desmognathus and piedmont Ambystoma salamanders. My own work was with the saprophagous insect community that visits small carrion, while others worked on aphids, cicadas, isopods, beetles, wasps, mosquitos, aquatic insects, fish, and more. I'm enjoying rekindling those days in retirement as I plow through the task of trying to learn about everything everywhere. Thanks to iNaturalist for creating a way to share this exploration with like-minded souls.
