Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Bioblitz- September 7th

Hello everyone,
The California Academy of Sciences, together with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, is hosting a bioblitz at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area on September 7th in support of California Biodiversity Day. I know it is short notice, but as the top observers in the area (and a few others I think might be interested), it would be amazing if you are available to join us and maybe help lead groups! We are meeting at 9 am (but open to an early birding group) and exploring until about noon.
We will be gathering at Parking Lot C.
Here is the Eventbrite link:

Feel free to share!
Let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Rebecca @rebeccafay

Marshall's Beach Trip 1 (Trip)

We took a hike down to Marshall's Beach in the Presidio. It was really, really windy, but we were setting out to look for insects, reptiles, and some plants. I added reptiles to my list to really try out trips and make myself focus and as I was taking a photo of an iris, I saw a garter snake (no photo) and an alligator lizard in the same spot! Then D found a green hairstreak on our way back up the hill.

Alison (kestrel) is getting married! Can you help celebrate?

Hello everyone,
Our friend and yours Alison Young (kestrel) is getting married on Saturday! We would love to surprise her with love from the iNat community!

@lhiggins and I have made a project for all of us to share observations and celebrate Alison and her husband-to-be Ivan!

All you need to do is go out this sometime between now and Monday and find an amazing plant, animal, fungi, slime mold, or any other evidence of life and submit it to this project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/celebrating-global-biodiversity-for-alison-ivan

We would love for you to write a note of congratulations in the description section when you upload your observation!

Shhh. It is a surprise, so don't tag her in your comments!

If you also join the project, we will send you a note afterward!

This is an old style project, so you have to actually add your observation!

Thank you all in advance for making this a very special day for Alison and Ivan.

I tried to tag as many folks as I could, but feel free to tell others, by sharing the link above, who might want to send best wishes to Alison & Ivan.
Thanks so much,

Lila and Rebecca

Snapshot Cal Coast 2018!

Hi everyone!

You’re tagged in this journal post because you’re one of the top iNaturalist observers along the California coast! Thanks for contributing your finds! You are all key to making iNaturalist go!

Alison & I wanted to let you all know that the third annual Snapshot Cal Coast is happening June 13 – June 20! This is an ongoing statewide effort to document California coastal biodiversity to better understand changes in species ranges and to get a sense of what species occur in specific coastal sites. Snapshot Cal Coast is organized by Citizen Science at the California Academy of Sciences in partnership with the California Marine Protected Area Collaborative Network and the California Ocean Protection Council.

We’re interested in species found in the rocky intertidal, sandy beaches, dunes, docks, estuaries, coastal scrub – anything along the coast from Del Norte to San Diego! Even though we are mostly focused on marine animals, we will get observations of all taxa from all coastal habitats, including birds, plants, reptiles, insects, and other terrestrial things!

We hope you will have a chance to head out to the coast June 13th- 20th. Thanks to many of you, last year for Snapshot Cal Coast 2017 almost 700 people made close to 14000 observations of over 1300 species!

We are hoping you can help again this year by making and sharing your observations along the California Coast. Any observations made along the coast – will be automatically added to our Snapshot Cal Coast 2018 project. There are also quite a few events happening in support of Snapshot Cal Coast, click here to find out more information and find an event near you.

If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comments or contact either one of us.

Thanks all!

Identifying for Snapshot Cal Coast 2018!

Hi everyone!

You’re tagged in this journal post because you’re one of the top identifiers for observations made along the California coast! Thanks for contributing your expertise to identify finds! You are all key to making iNaturalist go!

Alison & I wanted to let you all know that the third annual Snapshot Cal Coast is happening June 13 – June 20! This is the third year of a statewide effort to document California coastal biodiversity to better understand changes in species ranges and to get a sense of what species occur in specific coastal sites. Even though we are mostly focused on marine animals, we will get observations of all taxa from all coastal habitats, including birds, plants, reptiles, insects, and other terrestrial things!

Hundreds of folks will head out to the coast for these coordinated bioblitzes, June 13th- 20th. Last year almost 14000 observations were made as part of Snapshot Cal Coast 2017! Thanks in part to your awesome identification skills, in 2017, we added many, many species that had never been recorded on iNat!

We are hoping you can help again this year by keeping an eye on iNat and identifying for our Snapshot Cal Coast 2018 Project. We anticipate quite a few people new to iNaturalist participating in Snapshot Cal Coast, and getting IDs from folks like you will be hugely rewarding and will hopefully motivate them to keep on using iNat!
And, if you are in California, you can participate just by making observations along the coast – they will be automatically added to our Snapshot Cal Coast iNaturalist project. There are also quite a few events happening in support of Snapshot Cal Coast, click here to find out more information and find Snapshot Cal Coast Events.

If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comments or contact either one of us.

Thanks all!

American Malacological Society and Western Society of Malacologists Joint Meeting in Honolulu June 19th-23rd

Hello everyone,

June 19-23, 2018 the 84th Annual American Malacological Society (AMS) and the 51st Annual Western Society of Malacologists (WSM) will hold a joint meeting in Honolulu, HI.

I am the president of WSM and am helping to coordinate the conference and a citizen science symposium. I know some of you are paid to do research on snails and their relatives and some of you are not, but we are all united in our use of iNaturalist to further understanding of mollusks.

I wanted to make sure that those of you who normally attend these meetings knew about them and I also wanted to make sure those of you who are new to the work of malacological research and societies knew your contributions in the citizen science section and any part of the meeting would be more than welcome.

Both of these societies have a long history of amateur involvement and often people come to the meetings to learn, not just present.

The venue for this year's meeting will be the beautiful Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel, bookended with the reception at the Waikiki Aquarium, and closing banquet at the Bishop Museum.

Registration and abstract submission are now open!
Follow the links below to register and submit your abstract.

Early Bird Registration Closes April 20, 2018

I would love to see some of you there!
Please let me know if you are interested and would like to hear more!

Making Identifications for Snapshot Cal Coast: June 23rd-July 2nd

Hi everyone!

You’re tagged in this journal post because you’re one of the top identifiers for observations made along the California coast! Some of you may have already been tagged in a similar post sent to the top marine observers in California. Thanks for contributing your expertise to identify finds! You are all key to making iNaturalist go!

Rebecca & I wanted to let you all know that the second annual Snapshot Cal Coast is happening June 23 – July 2! It’s a statewide effort to document California coastal biodiversity to better understand changes in species ranges and to get a sense of what species occur in specific coastal sites. Snapshot Cal Coast is organized by CitizenScience at the California Academy of Sciences in partnership with the California Marine Protected Area Collaborative Network.

Hundreds of folks will head out to the coast for these coordinated bioblitzes, June 23 – July 2. Last year over 7000 observations were made as part of Snapshot Cal Coast 2016 -and this year we have over two times as many events! In 2016, we added over 35 species that had never been recorded on iNat! We are sure with more eyes on the ground (and water) we will find many, many interesting things!

You can help, by stepping up your identifying for our Snapshot Cal Coast Project. We anticipate quite a few people new to iNaturalist participating in Snapshot Cal Coast, and getting IDs from folks like you will be hugely rewarding and will hopefully motivate them to keep on using iNat!
If you are in California, you can participate just by making observations along the coast – they will be automatically added to our Snapshot Cal Coast iNaturalist project. There are also quite a few events happening in support of Snapshot Cal Coast; not all are open to the public but those that are have links you can click to find out more information: Snapshot Cal Coast Events.

If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comments or contact either one of us.

UCSC Arboretum Master Naturalist iNat training

Hello Santa Cruz area iNaters @dpom @leptonia @jmaughn @anudibranchmom
Together with the folks at the Ken Norris Center for Natural History at UCSC (http://norriscenter.ucsc.edu), the Academy is holding a UCSC campus and Reserve bioblitz on April 30th. In advance of the bioblitz, Linda Anderson (who runs the California Naturalist Group out of the UCSC Arboretum) would love to give her crew an iNat training. She is looking for someone to come talk to the group on April 14th from 7-9:30pm. They are looking for a brief inat intro and some training on how to use it, both in the field and on the web. Linda says, ' Seeing the benefits of 'many eyes' and how they can fit into real scientific research really got folks excited.'.

All of you are skilled users of iNaturalist, great naturalists, and great teachers. Would any of you be interested in giving a training to this group? It might even be better as a team effort.

Please email me (or reply to this message) and I can connect you with Linda.
Thanks so much for considering and I hope you all will sign up to be leaders for the bioblitz on 4/30.
Thanks again,
Rebecca
