Berry Springs Preserve Herps of Texas report, 25Aug2017

This month's amphibian monitoring at Berry Springs Preserve had been rescheduled twice - first, moved back a week due to the site champion being out of town chasing the total solar eclipse in Missouri, and second, moved up a day due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Harvey. But we were able to pull it off, keeping safe and dry, and were rewarded with a cool evening and three species: Blanchard's Cricket Frogs (Call Index = 2), American Bullfrog (CI = 1), and Rio Grande Leopard Frog (CI = 1). One of the newcomers that night was able to get both photos and a recording of two different Rio Grande Leopard Frogs - thanks, Mike !!
We saw a Yellow-crowned Night Heron and bats flying over the ponds before sunset.
The ponds had been dredged for algae and aquatic vegetation nine days earlier.
The monitoring period was 20:00 - 21:00.
Participants were Kathy, Mike & Amy, Carolyn, Nikki, Mike & Carol (welcome !), and Tonja.
Environmental Conditions at the main pond at sunset:

  • Air temperature = 82.2 deg F
  • Water temperature = 77.8 deg F
  • Sky = Mostly cloudy
  • Water level = Average
  • Relative humidity at sunset = 52 %
